김연우는 1995년 제7회 유재하 음악경연대회에서 금상을 받으며 데뷔했고, 토이의 객원 보컬로 참여해 세상에 그의 목소리를 알렸다. 이제까지 모두 4장의 솔로 정규 앨범을 발표했으며, 특히 '연인', '이별택시', '이미 넌 고마운 사람', '사랑한다는 흔한 말' 등의 노래가 많은 사랑을 받았다. 2011, 2012년에는 MBC <나는 가수다>에 출연하면서 보컬의 신이라는 뜻의 '연우신'이라는 별명을 얻었다. 현재 그는 대한민국에서 이론적으로나 감성적으로나 가장 뛰어난 보컬리스트라는 평가를 받고 있다.
